He admitted that he probably wouldn't have even mentioned his shoulder injury if he knew he would have felt this good. An MRI taken today on the shoulder revealed no structural damage, and Hamels will be treated through an exercise program. The Phillies announced Wednesday that top pitching prospect Cole Hamels will be called up from Triple-A to start on Friday against the Reds, according to the team's web site. "You always need pitching," said manager Charlie Manuel. "When someone is pitching that good, it's just a matter of time until he ends up in the big leagues. ... I'm all for anything that can help our club." Ryan Madson will be sent to the bullpen to make room in the rotation for Hamels. Hamels, who was promoted to Triple-A in late April, has posted a 2-0 record with a 0.39 ERA in three starts since the promotion. He has also struck out 36 and walked just one in 23 innings of work.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Phillies officals met yesterday to discuss the future of Cole Hamels and there were strong indications that his next start will come with the Phillies. "We're close," assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle said. "It's not going to be much longer, but there are a few moving pieces we have to figure out and people we would have to talk to." Ryan Madson and Gavin Floyd would be the "pieces," and one would have to move the bullpen. Both Madson and Hamels are scheduled to pitch Friday, so bumping Madson and bringing up Hamels may be the simplest solution.

In three starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Hamels is 2-0 with an 0.39 ERA, striking out 36 with one walk in 23 innings. "At some point before long we'll have to take a hard look at doing something," Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle said of the possibility of Hamels' promotion to the Phillies. "If he keeps pitching like this, I don't think it'll be a lot longer. But we still have to sort it out."

Cole Hamels had an MRI on his lower back Wednesday after experiencing more soreness and inflammation in the area, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The MRI showed nothing different than in December, when Hamels was diagnosed with a back condition that he might have to manage throughout his career. His 2005 season ended last July 19 because of back problems.
