Runelvys Hernandez and teammate John Buck got into a fight in the dugout Tuesday night during a game against the Indians, according to the AP. The two players charged each other and began throwing punches before being separated by teammates and coaches.

Unless the Royals pull off a trade in the meantime, they'll likely recall Runelvys Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha or use reliever Todd Wellemeyer to start Friday in place of the injured Scott Elarton, according to the KC Star. Hernandez is 5-6 with a 4.59 ERA in 12 Triple-A games, while Wellemeyer hasn't worked more than 2 1/3 innings since June 17.

After Runelvys Hernandez gave up five runs on six hits and a walk in just two-thirds of an inning Sunday, the Royals optioned him to Triple-A Omaha, according to the KC Star. "This is a performance-based move,” GM Allard Baird said. Hernandez will be replaced on the roster by today's starter, Seth Etherton.

Runelvys Hernandez dismissed the suggestion that a cramp in his left armpit caused his control problems in the second and third innings Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star. However, manager Buddy Bell wasn't convinced. “The first inning,” Bell said, “his velocity was up, and it seemed like his arm was fast. Then I thought he did something to himself. I guess he had a cramp under his (left) armpit. I don’t know if that affected him or not. He assured us he was fine, but after that, he couldn’t find the strike zone. That was pretty much the story.” Hernandez allowed five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. The Royals will wait and see how he feels today.

Runelvys Hernandez allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings during his start at Triple-A on Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star. Hernandez is the leading candidate to fill in as the Royals No. 5 starter on April 29, but this outing didn't help his chances. “His fastball and his command were just OK,” GM Allard Baird said. “I’m not ready to commit to saying he’ll be coming up.”
April 20, 2006
Runelvys Hernandez is the leading candidate to fill in as the Royals' No. 5 starter April 29, if he performs well at Triple-A Omaha, according to the KC Star. "He’s basically going to determine whether he comes up here or not,” manager Buddy Bell said. “I’m looking for him to show stuff and maintain his stuff. His velocity was up last time. That’s important to me in terms of his arm being as quick as it needs to be. We’ll see what happens.”
April 12, 2006
The KC Star reports that Runelvys Hernandez is not ready to join the Royals, so Mike Wood will start Saturday. Hernandez allowed eight earned runs in three innings in his Triple-A start Sunday. "The information I got is that his stuff was just average at best,” manager Buddy Bell said. “I’m disappointed because I really wasn’t considering anyone else. We’ve got to rearrange our rotation. It messes up our bullpen, obviously.”

Runelvys Hernandez allowed eight runs on seven hits and four walks in three innings of work during his rehab start for Triple-A Omaha on Sunday, according to the AP. March 27, 2006
Runelvys Hernandez, who reported to spring training overweight, is expected to start the season in the minors, according to the AP. He will be dropped into the No. 5 slot in the rotation - a slot that isn't needed until April 14. However, that's the same time that Mark Redman is scheduled to return from knee surgery, so it's possible that Hernandez will stay in the minors past April 14. "I'm still a bit concerned about his stamina, his durability and getting deeper into the game," manager Buddy Bell said. "We've got to make sure when he pitches, he's ready to give us some innings. We need to get him starts. How we do that, I'm not sure."
March 12, 2006
Runelvys Hernandez will follow opening-day starter Scott Elarton in the Royals' starting rotation, according to the KC Star. "I like Runelvys’ commitment to his conditioning,” manager Buddy Bell said. “His arm, for me, looks good and quick — a lot quicker than it was at the end of last year. He competes like a son of a gun. We just want to make sure he stays in line with his conditioning."
January 17, 2006
Runelvys Hernandez inked a one-year deal with the Royals on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration, according to the AP. The contract is worth $1,225,00 in 2006.
