Liriano was brilliant as a rookie, winning 12 games with a 2.16 ERA. He also struck out 144 batters over 121 IP, and had a ratio right at 1.00. Liriano was a strong Rookie of the Year and perhaps even Cy Young candidate as of late July, but he only pitched six innings over the last two months of the year as the elbow problem began to rear its ugly head.

He's had enough talks, and he understands. He's going to do the work now." Manager Ron Gardenhire had the following to say: "It's a muscular problem -- as the game was going on, he started to feel it.
