Francisco Liriano is progressing well in his rehab from Tommy John surgery, according to the AP. "I saw him in the Instructional League and he is throwing free and easy," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. "We know it's a process, but he's progressing fine. We'll have to see where he is (during spring training). The ball is popping out of his hand." Liriano, who missed all of the 2007 season, should be ready for spring, but a setback could alter his return date.

Francisco Liriano, who missed the entire 2007 season due to Tommy John surgery, remains on schedule to be back at full strength for spring training. "I don't want to get too excited and say he's going to be our No. 2 or 3 starter," Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "A lot has to happen before that comes around. I'm not really penciling him in at anything yet until we get to spring training and see how he's doing." Liriano has been throwing fastballs and changeups, although he won't throw breaking pitches until January.

Francisco Liriano is planning to rehab his elbow during the season and hopefully be able to participate in winter ball in November or December, according to the Star-Tribune. "We have a rehab schedule, and I think we're pretty much pointing toward winter ball," GM Terry Ryan said. "He might be able to participate in some drills in the [fall] instructional league camp ... but we are not going to jeopardize anything with this young man's future." Liriano has spent the past three months strengthening the elbow and building up the rest of his body.

Francisco Liriano hopes he'll recuperate from elbow surgery in time to start throwing off a mound in October, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports. "I won't start to throw until two months from now, and I'll do my first bullpen work six months later," Liriano said Friday.
