J.J. Putz will not pitch again this season because of a torn right hamstring, according to the AP. "He has had a good season. He established himself as a legitimate setup guy," manager Mike Hargrove said.

Mariners manager Mike Hargrove indicated that he wants to start using J.J. Putz for longer stretches in the sixth and seventh innings, according to the Seattle Times. Putz had been used primarily as the eighth-inning setup man, but appearing earlier in the game will allow him to use more of his off-speed pitches. Opposing teams appear to have gotten the scouting reports on his hard stuff, as he's given up home runs in four of his last five appearances.

J.J. Putz is the top candidate to be the Mariners' closer at the beginning of the year if Eddie Guardado isn't ready to start the season, according to the AP. Putz converted nine of 13 save opportunities over the final two months of last season. "Obviously, J. J. has closing experience so he's a consideration," Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. "He's a big, strong guy and throws the ball hard and throws strikes."
