Ronny Paulino could be sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis to keep Raul Chavez as the team's backup catcher when Ryan Doumit returns from the DL, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Manager John Russell is pleased with Chavez and commented, "I really like the way he's catching. I especially like how he's handling the rotation. We're seeing some clean innings. Now, is that totally the catcher? No, the pitchers are most important."

Ronny Paulino will start at catcher against Atlanta on Thursday, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Ryan Doumit started the first two games for Pittsburgh, but the team is facing lefty Mike Hampton today, which is why Paulino gets the call. He notably played in 133 games in 2007.

" Ronny Paulino is our catcher," said Pirates manager John Russell, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. However, Russell added, "But, as we've told everyone, there's no entitlement anymore. You've got to keep doing what you're supposed to do to play. We've relayed that message to everybody, and Ronny knows that." Basically, the Pirates informed Paulino that Ryan Doumit will get a fair shot at unseating Paulino as the everyday catcher or platooning with him, so watch their performances this spring to see how it fleshes out.

Ronny Paulino reported to the Pirates minicamp Tuesday 10 pounds lighter than he was at the end of last season. He now tips the scales at about 235, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Perhaps Paulino got tired of all the talk of the Bucs bringing in another catcher, because he certainly appears motivated to keep his job. Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit and Zach Duke have also shed some pounds over the offseason.
