Having signed veteran catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. yesterday, the Rangers will have Gerald Laird begin next season in the minors, according to the Dallas Morning News. "I would not be surprised if at some point Gerald is with us," general manager John Hart said. "But it's not in his or our best interests for him to be the backup catcher."

The Star-Telegram reports that Gerald Laird is still bothered by the thumb ligament he tore back in May. At this time, he intends to not take part in winter ball, so he can rest the digit. "I've never been hurt like this, but the doc said I should be healthy in spring training," Laird said. "I need to rest it, let it heal and get 100 percent and then start over again."
