It wasn't too long ago when the fantasy owner could look at Pittsburgh's Jason Bay and see a world of potential, but knee injuries in recent seasons have all but ended those hopes, stealing just four bases last season and falling well short of offensive expectation. However, it now appears Bay is fully healthy and back on track to excel in 2008, according to MLB.com. Bay stole his second base of the season in the Pirates' 2-3 loss to the Cubs on Friday night and tells reporters he's going to put his full effort into improving those numbers throughout the season. "I don't think I can lead the league in stolen bases, but I think I can get an extra base here or there," said Bay in speaking to reporters on Saturday morning. "I'm not going to steal 50, but I think I can steal 15 or 20."

Jason Bay entered Wednesday's game hitting .182, with only one extra base hit in 22 at-bats. Bay had zero RBI and had yet to jog around the bases. Through the first seven innings of Wednesday's loss to the Cubs, with Ryan Dempster on the mound, Bay's slump continued. However, once the former Cubs closer departed, Bay found his stroke. The Pirate outfielder hit the game tying home run in the bottom of the ninth off Chicago closer Kerry Wood and finished the evening 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Fantasy owners that believed they stole Bay in the middle rounds of mixed formats, would like some return, any return on their investment. Tonight was a good start to what many would like to think is a bounce back campaign.

The Pirates benched Jason Bay on Sunday as part of a plan to rest his right knee, not because of his slow start at the plate. "It's going to look like I'm doing this because of how things have gone for him," manager John Russell explains to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "That's not the case." Bay was seen with ice around his surgically repaired knee, and it sounds like he could take a seat on a regular basis throughout the season.

Bay didn't play in Monday's loss to the Phillies. The early round fantasy disappointment of a year ago, hit but .247 with 21 HR and four stolen bases. Those numbers followed a .286, 34 home run campaign. A return to his 2006 numbers makes the Pirate a draft day steal this March -- as he is leaving the draft boards in the middle-rounds of traditional formats.

Position players don't have to report until next Tuesday, but Bay has spent the offseason strengthening his right knee, and rules allow injured players to report early. The outfielder will be trying to rebound from a disappointing 2007 campaign.

Padres GM Kevin Towers said he will continue to pursue a trade for a right-handed hitting outfielder, and Jason Bay is one guys that's still on his radar, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Bay's teammate and former Padre Xavier Nady is also an option, as is Cub Matt Murton.
