Brian Bruney really took care of himself over the winter and hopes it will translate to success on the field. The reliever lost 20 pounds during the offseason with a conditioning program of daily workouts, no alcohol, a strict diet and plenty of sleep. He also has a better relationship with new manager Joe Girardi than he had with Joe Torre. "With Torre - and I'm not trying to bad-mouth anybody - sometimes you would go out there and try to be so good because you were scared of doing bad," Bruney said in the New York Daily News. "You can't pitch like that. (Joe) Girardi understands that you make mistakes - and I'm going to make them." Bruney should win a spot in the pen but will have to cut down on his walks (6.66 BB/9 last year) to be successful.

The Yankees signed Brian Bruney to a one-year, $725,000 deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration with the right-hander. Bruney was good for the Yanks in '06 but struggled for them last year, posting a 4.68 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and woeful 39/37 K/BB ratio over 50 innings.
