GM Brian Cashman has told Robinson Cano not to completely rule out the idea of moving to third base if the Yankees are unable to acquire a third baseman this winter, according to Newsday. "I told him, 'I love you at second base,"' Cashman said, "but I informed him that 'I know you can play third base. If you want to keep playing second base, I'm counting on you making sure that Wilson Betemit shows up to spring training in tip-top shape."' With Alex Rodriguez not expected to return, and Mike Lowell likely going back to Boston, there aren't many third basemen available this offseason. And the Yanks aren't convinced Wilson Betemit can handle the job full-time.

Robinson Cano is scheduled for a routine day off Wednesday, Joe Torre told the AP. Wilson Betemit is expected to start in Cano's place. As sizzling as Cano has been, maybe he doesn't need a day off. He's hitting .400 since the All-Star break, with 27 runs, seven homers and 29 RBI.

Robinson Cano's three walks Tuesday were a career high -- and one more than he had in all of May, the AP reports. Cano has been in a groove for the entire month, hitting .402 (35-for-87), with 20 runs scored, five homers and 19 RBI.

The Yankees gave Robinson Cano Sunday off because manager Joe Torre felt he needed a rest, according to the New York Times. Miguel Cairo got the start in his place.
