Cano's homer in the third yesterday again gave Girardi reason to think he might be on the verge of regaining his stroke: "Maybe today gets him going, I'm not sure." Cano is hitting only .154. Because of that, he has mostly been talking to reporters either to explain his offensive doldrums or to translate for close buddy Melky Cabrera, who happens to be leading the team in homers with six.

"Right now, I'm planning on using him as our sixth hitter as we move forward," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's not so much about what the other guys didn't do, it's more about what Robbie has done and who he is. I like him there, and he'll stay there for right now." Cano hit in the bottom third of the order most of last season, so this is certainly good news for his owners who are expecting Cano to take another step forward this season.
