The Pirates managed to find just four hits in their bats this evening as they suffered the 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, all but dominated by RHP Todd Wellemeyer in earning his fourth win of the season. Wellemeyer pitched seven innings, giving up a lowly one run on an even lowlier two hits. He walked three, struck out five, and did so on 11 fly outs mixed with five grounders.

Todd Wellemeyer continues to make Dave Duncan look like a genius as he held the Giants to just one run over seven innings to pick up win number two on the season.
April 7, 2008
Todd Wellemeyer had another excellent outing for the Cardinals on Monday as he limited the Astros to five hits, one walk and two runs in seven innings. Wellmeyer allowed two solo home runs on the evening, but this performance, combined with the work of other Cardinals starters, has turned a major concern into a huge strength thus far.
April 2, 2008
Todd Wellemeyer struck out six batters in five innings for the Cardinals on his way to his first victory of the season. Wellemeyer allowed only one run on the night though he did allow seven baserunners. The Cardinals are in desperate need of arms in the starting rotation, and this is exactly the type of performance they were hoping to get from Todd.
March 16, 2008
Hopes of working towards a spot in the starting rotation remain alive but are in trouble for Todd Wellemeyer, according to MLB.com. Wellemeyer allowed four hits and three runs through five innings today in a 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. The arm that worked in a relief mode last season walked just one and garnered three strike outs in the outing, but two home runs surrendered indicate there is still work to be done. Some offensive support would have been nice (just nine total hits for the Cards), but mistakes made ruled the story of the day.
March 6, 2008
Todd Wellemeyer was stretched out on Thursday and fared well for three innings. The Cardinals right-hander ran into trouble in the fourth and left after 3.2 innings of work. Wellemeyer allowed two runs on two hits, with four walks and four Ks. Wellemeyer was serviceable last year with the Cards. He finished the season with 11 starts, a 3-3 record, 4.54 ERA and struck out 60 in 79 innings of work. As was the case today his control is his Achilles. The righty walked 40 batters in '07.
January 29, 2008
The Cardinals avoided arbitration with Todd Wellemeyer by signing the right-hander to a one-year, $1 million deal Monday. Wellemeyer's ERA was 1.26 in 14 1/3 innings as a reliever for the Cardinals, though he could compete for a rotation job this spring.
