According to the St Louis Post Dispatch, starting pitcher Todd Wellemeyer was examined Saturday morning after admitting to elbow and forearm discomfort during and after Friday night's 10-out appearance against the Philadelphia Phillies. Wellemeyer described himself as "gator-arming" the ball in his last two innings as he found it impossible to straighten his elbow. "If it doesn't improve, I'm telling them I can't pitch," he said. "I'm not going out there to be a hero."

Todd Wellemeyer said his right elbow felt better Saturday than it has in a week, but the righty will still miss his next scheduled start, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It's nothing serious," said Wellemeyer. "I felt it after my start against Pittsburgh (May 30) and again Thursday's game. It was enough to get it checked out. But it feels better. … My body is resilient." The Cards left open the possibility that Wellemeyer could simply be pushed back a couple days, but it's more likely that he'll just be skipped altogether. An MRI on the elbow was negative, though it did reveal inflammation, a mild stress reaction and a slight impingement.

Todd Wellemeyer did not travel with the Cardinals to Houston but instead flew to St. Louis to meet with team doctors to have what manager Tony La Russa described as a "soreness near his biceps" checked out, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team is officially referring to the pitcher's ailment as right elbow inflammation. La Russa said there Wellemeyer's next start might be in question. "You always treat it like it's a big deal," La Russa said, "and hope for the best."

Hopes of working towards a spot in the starting rotation remain alive but are in trouble for Todd Wellemeyer, according to MLB.com. Wellemeyer allowed four hits and three runs through five innings today in a 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. The arm that worked in a relief mode last season walked just one and garnered three strike outs in the outing, but two home runs surrendered indicate there is still work to be done. Some offensive support would have been nice (just nine total hits for the Cards), but mistakes made ruled the story of the day.

Wellemeyer allowed two runs on two hits, with four walks and four Ks. Wellemeyer was serviceable last year with the Cards. He finished the season with 11 starts, a 3-3 record, 4.54 ERA and struck out 60 in 79 innings of work. As was the case today his control is his Achilles. The righty walked 40 batters in '07.

The Cardinals avoided arbitration with Todd Wellemeyer by signing the right-hander to a one-year, $1 million deal Monday. Wellemeyer's ERA was 1.26 in 14 1/3 innings as a reliever for the Cardinals, though he could compete for a rotation job this spring.
