He hit several balls into the seats at Chase Field, and marked the first time he has hit outside since sustaining his injury July 9. Manager Bob Melvin said, "After the first few swings, it looked like his normal swing. He was driving some balls out of the park."

If all goes well, Upton will hit on the field a couple more days before going on a rehab assignment. "I would say at the very least, a week," manager Bob Melvin said when asked how long of an rehab stint Upton would need. "I'd like him to feel pretty good about his swing when he comes back."

Melvin said, "We've been pretty cautious based on how he's felt day to day. There haven't been any setbacks, but there have been certain days where he's been pretty sore based on whatever treatment he's getting. We still don't know. We could use him. Looking at it like we did going into the All-Star break we thought he might have a chance to come back right after that. It's been lengthier than we anticipated."
