John Smoltz signed a two-year contract with the Braves that replaces his existing deal, which would have ended following this season. Smoltz's current contract called for him to earn an additional $100,000 per start this season, which could have added over $3 million to his salary. Smoltz is expected to return to the rotation full time next season.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that John Smoltz still wants to go back to starting. Smoltz said that if he becomes a free agent this fall he'll consider teams interested in him as a starter. Smoltz has a vesting option for next year that kicks in if he finishes 57 games this year - and he's currently behind that pace. Even if he remains with the Braves, he intends to press the issue of starting next year - or so he says now, as we've heard this before.
