The Braves exercised their 2007 option on John Smoltz on Thursday, according to the AP. "I had a conversation with John yesterday (Wednesday) in Washington and officially notified him that the Braves were going to exercise the option on his 2007 contract," Atlanta GM John Schuerholz said. "John has been a constant for this organization, both with his pitching and his leadership, and our plan to exercise this contract option for next season was never in question." Financial terms were not disclosed. Smoltz is 13-9 with a 3.71 ERA this season.

John Smoltz left Monday's start after failing to get an out in the third inning, and his ailing right groin likely attributed to his struggles, acccording to the AP. "He tweaked (the groin) a little bit and got some balls up," manager Bobby Cox said. "Obviously, it bothered him. He didn't have good location. He's had this before and it usually goes away. Tonight, it didn't." Smoltz allowed six runs on six hits and two walks prior to his departure.

John Smoltz wasn't comfortable enough on the hard mound to push off with his strained right groin yesterday, so he pushed back his usual between-starts session to today, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Still, he said he plans to make his start on Wednesday. "Something would have to really go wrong for me to not pitch," he said.

He was moving without difficulty Saturday and is expected to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I feel like I'm a lucky man, like I escaped serious injury by not trying to pitch more," said Smoltz.
