Pittsburgh 3B Jose Bautista put the wood on the ball for the Pirates today, but alas it was for naught as his team fell 9-8 in a barnburner against the Washington Nationals. Bautista went 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting his seventh double and fourth homer of the year, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored.

Jose Bautista will get the day off on Monday, and Chris Gomez will start in his place, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "We just want to give Jose some time to work on some things," manager John Russell says. "Also, we've got some pretty good players that we need to keep involved."

Jose Bautista avoided arbitration by inking a one-year, $1.8 million deal Thursday. He can earn $100,000 more in incentives for games played or plate appearances. Bautista hit .254 with 15 homers in 142 games last year.
