Jose Bautista was given his first career start at second base Friday night. Manager Jim Tracy elected to start Bautista in place of regular second baseman Jose Castillo because "I just want to see him play second base a little bit, that's all."

Manager Jim Tracy has stated that Chris Duffy will get the majority of the playing time in center field from now on, meaning that Jose Bautista will be relegated to backup duty. Bautista has hit just .231 over the last 12 games.

Jose Bautista has rejoined the Pirates after being on bereavement leave because of his grandmother's death, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He will be available to play on Wednesday.

Jose Bautista left the Pirates yesterday to fly to the Dominican Republic to attend the funeral of his grandmother, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Placed on the bereavement list, Bautista is expected to rejoin the team on Tuesday. Yurendell DeCaster will replace Bautista on the roster.

Jose Bautista started in center field for Pirates on Thursday for just the second time in his career. Manager Jim Tracy said Bautista would continue to play in the outfield against left-handed starters, as well as share time at third base with Freddy Sanchez until Joe Randa returns, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The team still considers Bautista's long-term future to be at third base, but he's played center field in winter ball as well as a couple of times a week in the minors.
