The Tigers have received a few offers for Chris Shelton, but they're not looking to deal him unless the offers they receive start getting better, according to the Detroit News. "They think they're gonna get him for nothing," Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said on Day 1 of the winter meetings. "But we like him."

Chris Shelton started at first base for the Tigers on Monday in his first big league action since being sent to the minors at the end of July. Shelton was 0-for-2 with a run and a walk. "He was fine, but you can't tell much from one game," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I'll probably play him again tomorrow, but I'll sleep on that."

The Tigers recalled Chris Shelton from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday to serve as an emergency catcher, according to the AP. When Ivan Rodriguez was hit in the head during Friday's game, the Tigers decided to bring Shelton up as an emergency catcher, even though he has not caught in the majors since 2004. Shelton hit just .266 in 28 games for Toledo and was not called up when rosters expanded to 40 players on Friday.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Chris Shelton, who was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after the Tigers obtained Sean Casey from Pittsburgh, will rejoin the team no later than Sept. 1 when rosters are expanded, according to the AP. "I believe in my heart that Chris Shelton is the first baseman of the future for the Detroit Tigers," Leyland said. "It's just one of those situations where Chris Shelton needs to go down and play. He will definitely be back up Sept. 1, if not before. I think he'll be our first baseman next year, and maybe more this year again."

With the acquisition of Sean Casey, the Tigers sent Chris Shelton down to Triple-A Toledo, according to the AP. It's possible that this is just a temporary move. While Shelton has struggled in the second half thus far (.245-0-3), he had actually been heating up a bit. In his last six games, he was hitting .381.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland has been trying to help Chris Shelton with his swing, encouraging him to keep his hands back, according to the Detroit News. "When you hit, you can't just stand there and swing the bat all of a sudden," Leyland said. "You have to get a little something going. This is a game of movement. You have to get the bat to a hitting position." Shelton is hitting just .195 over the last 12 games.
