Nick Markakis has been on a tear over the last month-plus. His Wednesday night performance in a loss to the Blue Jays saw his average climb above .300 for the first time this year. The right fielder went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Markakis' performance raised his batting average to .304 on the season.

Nick Markakis and the Orioles were not able to work out a new contract by Tuesday's deadline, so the club renewed his current deal, according to the AP. "Unfortunately, while we were able to reach an agreement with everyone else on the roster that fit into that category, we weren’t with Nick," club president Andy MacPhail said. "It’s not a terribly unusual thing in our industry. It’s to be avoided if you can, but in this case we really weren’t able to find any common ground." After hitting .300 and knocking in 23 homers and 112 RBI in 2007, Markakis was hoping for a substantial raise from last year's $400,000 salary, but he'll make just $55,000 more in 2008.
