The White Sox are expected to announce today they've acquired Carlos Quentin from Arizona in exchange for first baseman Chris Carter, according to MLB Radio. Quentin hit just .214 in 81 games in 2007 due to injury problems, but he still has good upside and could find regular playing time in Chicago's outfield. He underwent shoulder surgery in October, and it's possible he'll miss the beginning of the season.

Carlos Quentin stated Wednesday that he would likely undergo surgery after the season to repair a torn labrum he suffered during spring training, according to the Arizona Republic. "I figure I might as well," he said. "When the off-season comes around, fix it. We'll confront that when the season ends. When you get an opportunity to fix something you should fix it so mentally and physically you know nothing's wrong with you." Quentin, who hit just .210 in 200 at-bats with the Diamondbacks, is batting .375 (10-for-32) in 10 games since being sent down to Triple-A.

"Carlos can be his own worst enemy at times," manager Bob Melvin said in the Arizona Republic. "He's real hard on himself and a very accountable guy who wants to be there and step up for his team. And when he doesn't, he can get down on himself a little bit." Scott Hairston replaced Quentin in the lineup.

March 22, 2007
Carlos Quentin will have the small labrum tear in his non-throwing shoulder examined in a couple of days, then begin a four- or five-day strengthening program, according to the Arizona Republic. "If it responds to where we think we can get him ready for the season, I don't think we'll have an issue," manager Bob Melvin said. "If we get a little deeper than that and we don't feel we can get him enough at-bats to get ready for the start of the season, then you look to backdate (place him on the DL). But we haven't come to any conclusions as far as that goes."

"He will continue to do all his throwing and his running," said manager Bob Melvin. "The only thing he can't do is hit." The injury puts Quentin's status for opening day in question, but Melvin isn't ruling him out yet. "We'll start him with some batting practice, and then see if we can get him in some game situations," said Melvin. "Once it calms down, it becomes how quickly we can get him in a cage and start swinging. We'll see where we are at somewhere around the 26th and see if we can get him ready to start the season."

"I could have finished the game (Friday night against Oakland), but I'll listen to the trainers and take their advice."
