April 10, 2008

April 8, 2008
Randy Johnson, who's coming back from back surgery, allowed three runs while striking out seven over six innings Tuesday in his second rehab start for Triple-A Tucson. A much better performance this time out from the Big Unit. He's expected to be activated from the DL on Monday, but check back for updates to make sure.
April 4, 2008
Randy Johnson, who is still recovering from offseason back surgery, allowed five runs on eight hits in four innings of work Thursday, this according to the East Valley Tribune. The Big Unit struck out one, walked two and dodged trouble in his first three innings. The Sidewinders beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 12-10. “It’s frustrating because I put in a lot of time and effort this whole offseason into being ready,” Johnson said. “The biggest reward is when you can go and get the results that you want and feel confident and feel like you’re making progress.” That did not happen Thursday. Johnson, who threw 53 of his 78 pitches for strikes, said he felt like he was “regressing” since allowing one hit in three innings against the Angels on March 15. Johnson will pitch Tuesday against Salt Lake at TEP, and at that time the organization will make a determination on whether he will return to the D'backs rotation.
April 3, 2008
Randy Johnson is reportedly going to make his first start with the D-Backs on April 14, according to the East Valley Tribune. Johnson will make one more minor league start for the Sidewinders on Tuesday, to get his pitch count up a bit higher.
April 3, 2008
Randy Johnson is going to start a Triple-A (Tucson) game tonight, according to the Arizona Republic. He threw 75 pitches in his last outing and could challenge the 90-pitch range tonight. After tonight's performance, Johnson and the team will decide his next step. He could be activated from the DL, although he is likely to continue to build up his pitch count in the minors first.
April 1, 2008
Randy Johnson is scheduled to start tonight for Triple-A Tucson. He threw 75 pitches in his last outing and could approach 90 pitches tonight, according to the Arizona Republic. Johnson, who's coming back from back surgery, and the D'Backs will determine the next step in the left-hander's rehab after tonight's outing. It's possible he could be activated from the DL, but it's more likely that he'll make at least one more rehab start to increase his innings total. We'll keep you updated on how the Big Unit fares tonight and what the plan for him will be going forward.
March 26, 2008
Randy Johnson will open the season on the 15-day DL, according to the East Valley Tribune. Johnson is expected to make one more start with the Sidewinders during their season-opening homestand before possibly returning to the Diamondbacks for the last game of their first homestand April 13. When asked if he had a target date for returning to the majors, Johnson answered, “Whenever I am ready. I’ll make one more start right now and see how I feel.” Johnson is recovering from back surgery.
March 25, 2008
Randy Johnson will make a minor league start on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. As the bulk of the Arizona squad travels across town to take on the Colorado Rockies at Hi Corbett Field on Wednesday, eyes will be on one of Chicago's minor league outings at Tucson Electric Park as Johnson gets the start. Johnson has battled to recover from off-season back surgery, and while signs of return have come forth during spring training, fears of starting the season on the DL have persisted. Tomorrow could be a positive step forward.
March 24, 2008
Randy Johnson will likely miss his first turn in the rotation this year, though the team still hopes he will be able to avoid the DL or serve no more than a short stint on it, this according to MLB.com. Johnson hasn't had any setbacks yet, but he just hasn't had enough work to build up his pitch count yet. If you count on a mid-April return for Johnson, you will likely be in the right area, and then it's just a matter of his health determining his worth this season.
March 21, 2008
Randy Johnson was pleased with his performance on Friday, even if it wasn't perfect as he allowed five hits and two runs in 3.2 innings, this according to the AP. “I’d say today was very productive,” he said. “I threw all my pitches, worked both sides of the plate. I made some good pitches and I made some bad ones.” Johnson will likely need at least two more starts to get ready for the rigors of the regular season, so there is a chance that he could start the season on the DL, though up until this point he hasn't suffered any setbacks which is a huge plus in his favor and a great sign for those of you who rostered RJ late in drafts.
March 15, 2008
Randy Johnson was solid over three innings of work against the Angels on Saturday as he only allowed one run on one hit, which was a home run by Gary Matthews. He struck out a pair with no walks and his recovery from back surgery continues to go well.
March 10, 2008
Randy Johnson allowed four runs in 1.1 innings on Monday as he threw 20 of 33 pitches for strikes, this according to MLB.com. Johnson will likely make his next start on Saturday. While the results certainly weren't ideal, the fact that Johnson made it through the outing without a setback is a huge positive. It's looking more and more likely that Johnson will be able to help the D'Backs this season, and perhaps early in April with his comeback from back surgery going so well.
March 8, 2008
Randy Johnson is slated to make his Cactus League debut on Monday, according to MLB.com. "This is exactly where we kind of had it mapped out to," manager Bob Melvin said. "We're right on schedule." Johnson underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in August. So far, so good, but let's see what he can do on Monday.
March 5, 2008
Randy Johnson tossed 36 pitches in a simulated batting practice session on Tuesday. "He's very encouraged," manager Bob Melvin tells the Arizona Republic. "His back, knock wood, hasn't given him any problems. It's free and easy." Johnson will throw a side session on Saturday and may get into a game next week. Both the team and Johnson agree that his starts and innings may be limited in 2008, and the paper notes 22-to-25 starts as a range.
March 1, 2008
Randy Johnson is scheduled to take the mound for his next throwing session on Tuesday, according to the East Valley Tribune. Johnson will face hitters in batting practice then receive four days of rest, the longest he has gone between outings this spring. Johnson is still about a week behind his mound-mates this spring and will likely miss the first round of the rotation. Johnson is on track to make his regular season debut on April 6 in Colorado.
February 28, 2008
Randy Johnson took to the mound on Thursday and faced live hitting for the first time during spring training. The live batting practice session saw the "Big Unit" throw 53 pitches to teammates Chris Rahl and Trent Oeltjen. Nick Piecoro, the Diamondbacks beat writer for Arizona Republic, suggests that Johnson is about a week behind the other pitchers and will miss the rotation of the regular season. The report mentioned that Johnson could pitch April 6 in Colorado.
February 24, 2008
Randy Johnson threw 26 pitches off a mound Sunday and could be ready to face hitters in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, according to the AP. "We're going kind of outing to outing with it so we don't get too far ahead of ourselves," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've had no setbacks." The Big Unit is coming back from back surgery and could be great late-round value if he can somehow manage to make 30 starts.
February 22, 2008
Randy Johnson threw a second straight bullpen session without experiencing any problems in his attempt to comeback from back surgery, this according to MLB.com. "He looked great today," Arizona GM Josh Byrnes said. "At this point, for any pitcher, it's sort of just looking comfortable and each time on the mound showing a little bit of progress." Johnson, if healthy, would give the D'Backs the most dominant top-3 in the NL (with Brandon Webb and Dan Haren). The team will continue to take it easy with the Unit, but as of this writing, things are moving in a very positive direction with the dominating lefty.
February 18, 2008
Randy Johnson, who just six months ago underwent his second back surgery in less than a year, was reportedly moving like a kid on Sunday, notes the Baltimore Sun. The Diamondbacks southpaw threw off the mound in front of Bob Melvin and impressed his manager. "He came out throwing bullets," Melvin said.
February 17, 2008
Randy Johnson didn't return from back surgery to be a former shell of himself. "My expectations are the same now as they were when I was 25 or 35," he tells MLB.com. "It was a lot easier when I was throwing 95-100 mph, but now I find it a lot more of a challenge to go out and get Major League hitters out with what I have. I still think I can go out there and dominate at times." Johnson made only 10 starts in 2007, but he is on track to participate fully this spring.
February 7, 2008
Randy Johnson threw off the mound Tuesday for the first time since his back surgery last summer, tossing 25 fastballs and reporting no problems afterwards, according to the Arizona Republic. The lefty is on track to participate fully in spring training.
January 27, 2008
Bob Melvin has watched Randy Johnson play catch lately, and the D-backs manager likes what he's seen, the team's official website reports. Johnson, who suffered a reherniation of a disc in his back last season and underwent back surgery during the summer for the second consecutive season, is expected to be ready to go when pitchers and catchers have their first workout on Feb. 15. "He's fairly close to throwing off the mound," Melvin said. "He probably will throw off the mound a few times before we get to Spring Training."
