The Dodgers are publicly threatening to back out of the three-team deal that would send Randy Johnson to the Yanks, according to Newsday. They were the only one of the three teams to not file paperwork yesterday. "We're holding it up," DePodesta said in a Los Angeles radio interview. "We want to make sure the trade is in the best interests of our '05 club. As it stands, the only way it's attractive is if we do other things alongside."

The only things that likely could stop it from happening are unexpected failed physicals or an inability to work out contract extensions for the Big Unit and Green.

Johnson's agent indicated recently that his client would like to be traded to a contender. The Big Unit has one more season at $16 million left on his contract.

"The only way I'd probably want to leave is if a trade would benefit the Diamondbacks by my leaving," he added. Randy Johnson has apparently told his friends that while he would like to be traded to a contender, he would also like to remain in the NL, according to Newsday. He would like the opportunity to win his sixth Cy Young award, and he would lose his season statistics to date if he jumped leagues mid-season. When he indicated that he would drop his no-trade clause to be traded to New York, he was apparently including the Mets as well as the Yankees.

After getting hit around pretty good in his last start, Randy Johnson threw a complete game shutout on Friday. He allowed only two hits and struck out eight Padres' batters while walking only one. He's now 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA on the season.
