The doctor said he was thrilled," said Johnson's agent, Barry Meister.” Johnson, who pitched through the injury in the latter part of this season, is expected to be ready for the start of next season, although he might start the spring training behind the other pitchers.

"It was surprisingly good," Johnson said. "Everybody was more pleased than I was, so I guess that's a good thing. My only concern is a stiff back." Johnson threw 41 pitches in the session.

Johnson said he'll throw a bullpen session Sunday to prepare his balky back for the playoffs. "My arm felt good, but tomorrow will be the real barometer on how I feel," Johnson said. "And then, obviously, if I get through that, how my back feels on Monday." Johnson is scheduled to pitch Game 3 of next week's first-round playoff series against Minnesota or Detroit.

Johnson received the suspension for throwing at Cleveland's Eduardo Perez in retaliation for Jorge Posada getting hit on the elbow by a Jason Johnson offering on Wednesday. Johnson's next start is scheduled for Monday, which will change if he accepts the punishment, but if he appeals he will be allowed to play until his case is heard.
