Randy Johnson, recovering from a second back surgery, hasn't encountered any setbacks in his rehab program. "Right now, things are progressing well," GM Josh Byrnes told the Arizona Republic. "I think Randy feels like the added time between surgery and the opening of spring training will be beneficial. We'll know more once he gets into the routine of throwing and recovering and throwing again." Johnson is expected to be ready for spring training.
July 27, 2007
Randy Johnson will have season-ending back surgery and intends to be back for the Diamondbacks at spring training next year, according to the AP. "I have no intention at this time of retiring," he said at a news conference Friday. "I'll cross the bridge of surgery and be willing to go through the process of rehabilitation again because I know I can still pitch." The operation will take place next Friday in Los Angeles.
July 26, 2007
Randy Johnson, who threw a three-inning simulated game on Tuesday, is slated to throw another bullpen session on Friday, according to the Arizona Republic. Barring any setbacks, it's at least possible he could come off the DL and rejoin the D'Backs rotation by next weekend.
July 25, 2007
Randy Johnson threw a three-inning simulated game on Tuesday, his first work since going down with a herniated disk in his back earlier this month, according to the Arizona Republic. "I will probably talk to BoMel (Melvin) and (pitching coach) Brian Price later on today or tomorrow and see how I feel later on tonight and see how I respond to that tomorrow. If I feel good, then we'll march forward. If I don't then . . . " - Johnson paused a few seconds - "we'll cross that bridge as well." Consider the veteran still out indefinitely until we learn more information.
July 23, 2007
Randy Johnson, who has been on the 15-day DL since July 3 with a herniated disk and irritated sciatic nerve, played catch in the Chase Field outfield before Monday's game, according to the AP. He is scheduled to throw a two-inning simulated game on Tuesday.
July 23, 2007
Randy Johnson will play catch on Monday and could throw a simulated game on Tuesday, according to the AP. "Obviously after he plays catch (Monday) will dictate whether or not we think he should throw a simulated game on Tuesday," manager Bob Melvin said. A simulated game would consist of Johnson throwing two 20-pitch innings.
July 19, 2007
Randy Johnson played catch on Monday, had a productive bullpen session Tuesday and played catch again Wednesday, the AP reports. On the 15-day DL with a sore back, he is scheduled for long toss on Thursday. "The fact that he threw a significant bullpen that he was able to go out and play catch today makes me feel that much better," manager Bob Melvin said. Depending how Johnson feels, another bullpen session could be scheduled for Friday or Saturday.
July 18, 2007
Randy Johnson, out with a herniated disk in his back, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and came away feeling good, according to the Arizona Republic. (Today) will be a key day to see how he feels after, obviously, taxing himself a little more in the bullpen, other than just playing catch," Melvin said. The Big Unit is expected to throw at least two more bullpen sessions before facing hitters.
July 14, 2007
The good news is that Randy Johnson played catch Friday for the second straight day. The bad news is that the Unit stressed that he is not close to returning to action, according to the Arizona Republic. "We're going a little slower this time, that might be the best route to go," Johnson said. "The problem's not going to go away, but (we can) let things calm down a little." It's probably going to be several more days before he even gets on a mound, so don't expect him back any time soon.
July 12, 2007
Arizona GM Josh Byrnes doesn't have a timetable for Randy Johnson's return, but he did say "It's not going to be anywhere close" to Saturday, which is the first day Johnson is eligible to be activated from the DL. Byrnes said Johnson, who is dealing with back problems, would proceed more slowly in his return than he did the last time he was on the DL, according to the Arizona Republic. He came back after 17 days on the DL last time.
July 8, 2007
Manager Bob Melvin said that Randy Johnson could begin playing catch by the end of the week. Johnson is eligible to return from the DL on July 14, but he won't be ready to return from his back injury at that time, according to the AP.
July 4, 2007
Randy Johnson, who landed on the DL Tuesday with a herniated disk in his back, plans to take 10 days off and then be re-evaluated, according to the Arizona Republic. "I'm basically pitching on one leg," he said."“I'm not going to be very effective that way, no matter who you are. So I'll just try to get as healthy as I can and go from there, one step at a time."
July 3, 2007
The D'Backs have placed Randy Johnson back on the DL. The left-hander is still bothered by a herniated disk in his back that caused a DL stint last month. Yusmeiro Petit was called up from Triple-A Tucson to make Johnson's start for him tonight.
July 3, 2007
Manager Bob Melvin said Randy Johnson could be allowed to reach the 90s in his pitch count Tuesday. Johnson threw just 70 pitches last week in his first start back from a herniated disk in his back. The D'Backs have lined up Triple-A Tucson pitcher Yusmeiro Petit on Johnson's schedule just in case the Unit wouldn't be able to go, but the team expects Johnson to make his starts. "We feel like Randy's going to make his starts," Melvin said in the Arizona Republic. "We're just preparing. (Petit) was pitching the best (among Tucson starts)."
June 29, 2007
Randy Johnson wasn't sharp in his return to action Thursday, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) over three innings. He threw 70 pitches. "I chalk this up hopefully to coming off the disabled list and not pitching in 18 days," Johnson told the AP. "I'm looking forward to my next start in St. Louis."
June 28, 2007
Randy Johnson will be limited to about 85 pitches when he returns to action Thursday, the AP reports. He's been out due to a herniated disk in his back.
June 26, 2007
Randy Johnson will return to the Diamondbacks' rotation on Thursday, 10 days after he was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his back, according to the AP. He declared himself ready after he had no lingering problems coming off a sharp, two-inning simulated game on Monday. "Today was a big day," said Johnson. "I didn't feel that bad, relatively speaking. It's nothing that I haven't felt already last year when I was pitching or earlier this year."
June 25, 2007
One week after being diagnosed with a herniated disk, Randy Johnson looked sharp in a simulated game on Monday and could be close to returning to Arizona's starting rotation, according to the AP. "I'm pretty encouraged by what I saw today," manager Bob Melvin said. "I was surprised at how well he threw. Everything was there -- sharp slider, and he threw really well." Melvin wouldn't commit to a date for Johnson's return until he sees how the back responds Tuesday.
June 25, 2007
It looks like Randy Johnson might get to start on Thursday. Manager Bob Melvin said he wanted to see the Unit work a side session or simulated game on Monday before making a final call, though, according to the Arizona Republic. Johnson said his troublesome back feels fine, but we'll have to wait and see how he responds Monday.
June 24, 2007
Randy Johnson should throw again on flat ground Sunday. He reported no setbacks Saturday after tossing on flat ground the day before, according to the Arizona Republic. That's another positive step for the Unit in his recovery from a herniated disk in his back, but the Diamondbacks have yet to target his next start.
June 23, 2007
Randy Johnson was able to toss 42 pitches on flat ground Friday. If he responds well today, he'll play catch and throw again Sunday, according to the Arizona Republic. June 20, 2007
An MRI Tuesday revealed that Randy Johnson has a herniated disk in his back. It's the same injury that hampered him last year and the same disk he had surgically repaired only eight months ago. Johnson is eligible to return from the DL next Tuesday, but he might not be ready then. He does, however, plan on pitching with the pain. "It's a little bit of a setback and a little frustrating," Johnson said in the Arizona Republic. "I feel like I've hit my stride, I think my numbers indicate that. Last year I had a (high) ERA because my back was bothering me. I think I put a lot of things to rest when I came back here and I started pitching well. Obviously, I'll have to go into it with a positive frame of mind." Johnson played catch without pain before Tuesday's game and is scheduled to have a long-toss session today. "How he feels after (throwing long toss) will dictate how we go about setting up his schedule," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's pitched with it before; he's going to pitch with it again. We're going to do the best we can to have him healthy each and every time he goes out there."
June 19, 2007
Randy Johnson was examined Monday by Los Angeles back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins. Johnson was placed on the DL Saturday and would like to return for next week's series against the Dodgers. "When he gets back here (today) we'll probably have a little bit clearer picture on when he is going to start playing catch, when he would throw a bullpen or whatever," manager Bob Melvin told the Arizona Republic. "I know he would like to pitch against LA (next week). As soon as he went on the DL that was his focus, and that will remain his focus. Yet we will probably have a better idea tomorrow."
June 18, 2007
Randy Johnson, out with a lower back injury, saw a doctor on Monday, and the D'Backs are hoping he'll be able to return for the Dodgers series, which takes place June 25-28. He's first eligible to be activated on June 26. With an off day on Thursday, the team plans to skip Johnson's place in the rotation this week.
June 17, 2007
Randy Johnson is aiming to return as soon as he's eligible to come off the disabled list. The Unit could begin playing catch early next week and toss a simulated game five or six days before his eventual return, according to the Arizona Republic. He's eligible to return on June 26, but more should be known about his status once an MRI of his sore back is examined on Monday.

May 20, 2007
Randy Johnson has been bothered by soreness in his surgically repaired back recently, but the Diamondbacks aren't concerned. Manager Bob Melvin said the soreness is typical for a player coming off such a procedure, according to the Arizona Republic. "I think progressively he'll get better the farther along we get," Melvin said. "It's just something he's going to have to work through." The Unit was limited to just 79 pitches in his last outing, so while it's not a major concern right now, it might be if he can't shake off the soreness in the near future. Johnson faces the Pirates on Sunday.

But overall, I feel comfortable." Johnson is slated to pitch again Friday before rejoining the Diamondbacks, potentially starting on April 18 or 19 against San Diego.
