Chad Gaudin threw off a mound Saturday for the first time since September, according to the San Francisco Gate. Pitching coach Curt Young said that Gaudin's arm is strong, "very lively," he said. "He wasn't holding back." Gaudin, working his way back from hip and foot surgeries, is a couple of weeks behind the rest of the A's pitchers. However, he's right on track to make his first regular-season start April 12.

The Mercury News reports that not only did Chad Gaudin have surgery on his left hip and right big this offseason, but he also had a procedure to remove a tumor on his esophagus. Doctors had known about the tumor since 2002, but since a biopsy showed it was non-cancerous and it wasn't very big, they left it alone. But several months ago Gaudin began having trouble swallowing because the tumor had grown. Gaudin hopes to be able to pitch by March 1.

Gaudin is coming off an off-season where he underwent two surgeries, one on his foot and another on his hip, which is the reason for his tardiness at the start of camp. Gaudin was 11-13 with a 4.42 ERA last season, though he slumped terribly in the second half going 3-10. He should only interest those in AL Only leagues, and then he should still be a very late pick.

Chad Gaudin avoided going to arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract with the A's on Friday, according to the AP. He'll make about $1.7 million this coming season. He's still wearing a walking boot as he recovers from surgery on his right foot and left hip. He should be ready for the beginning of the season, though a setback during spring training could delay his season debut.
