Joey Gathright, who is expected to report to Kansas City on Wednesday, will be the Royals everyday centerfielder with David DeJesus shifting to left field, according to the official team website. Gathright is expected to bat leadoff, but not for the next several weeks. "He's one of those guys that's a developing offensive player," said general manager Dayton Moore said. "The one phase of his game that will show up every day and contribute to our lineup is his speed element. I think his offense will blow up in this ballpark because of the vastness of the alleys."

The Royals acquired Joey Gathright and infielder Fernando Cortez from the Devil Rays for pitcher J.P. Howell on Tuesday, according to the Royals' official website. Gathright hit .201 with 12 SB in 55 games for Tampa Bay before being demoted to Triple-A Durham on June 6.

Joey Gathright missed his second straight game on Wednesday because of a stiff neck. The Tampa Tribune reports that Gathright will be evaluated again today. Gathright suffered the injury during Monday's altercation with Julian Tavarez and subsequent pileup.

Joey Gathright was ejected from Monday's spring game following an altercation with Boston's Julian Tavarez. Tavarez stepped on Gathright on a close play at home plate, and Gathright pushed Tavarez's leg. Tavarez responded with a punch to Gathright's face. It's unclear if Gathright's actions will draw a suspension.

Joey Gathright could play center field in cold weather games early in the season as the Devil Rays look to protect Rocco Baldelli, according to the Tampa Tribune. It appears that Gathright will make the team and rotate between outfield and DH depending on what other players are sitting. If Aubrey Huff ends up at third base, Gathright could be an everyday player, at least until Delmon Young arrives.

Joey Gathright was forced to leave Tuesday's game with a strained left shoulder, which he's had problems with before, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He downplayed it, saying it was only residual pain from two previous separations and surgeries. "I've still got some scar tissue in that shoulder, and any time I land wrong it's going to hurt," Gathright said. "That's the only thing that happened." He expects to play Thursday.

"If I get three at-bats in a game, I may bunt twice, maybe." He unsuccessfully tried to bunt for a base hit twice during Thursday's exhibition game.
