Last month, Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Gathright certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases; in an everyday role the center fielder could likely steal closer to 50.

Joey Gathright feels that if he had stolen 30 bases last year he wouldn't be in a fight for playing time in the Royals OF, this according to a report from the AP. However, Gathright said that former manager Buddy Bell limited his work on the bases last year which precluded him from reaching the 30-SB mark (he had only nine). “In Triple-A, I had nobody telling me when to go and when not to go. When you have the green light, you have control over when you should go. That’s all it is. If you’re not comfortable on first base, you’re not going to be able to steal a base.” Gathright has long been a fine end game grab in AL Only leagues because of that speed, and he certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases if given the chance. If he can continue to slap the ball around the field and get on base (.371 OBP last year), Gathright figures to have a long career even if he never receives the playing time he craves.
