Felix Hernandez will make another start this year, according to the AP. Because Felix Hernandez threw just five innings and 67 pitches Saturday, Mike Hargrove might let his young pitcher have one more start this year, according to the Mariners official site. The original plan was for this to be Felix's last turn of the season. "It was a relatively easy five innings," Hargrove said, of Hernandez, who yielded two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. "He has good stuff and gives us a chance to win. He may make a start at home. We'll see about that. But he was outstanding."

Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said Felix Hernandez will make his final start of the season on Saturday at Chicago, according to the AP. Hernandez has already thrown 179 innings and Hargrove doesn't want to expose the 20-year-old's valuable arm to more wear and tear, so he'll be shut down for the rest of the season after Saturday.

In an effort to keep Felix Hernandez from being overworked, the Mariners are keeping him on a pitch count, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "We were trying to keep him at 100 pitches or seven innings," manager Mike Hargrove said. They also will skip his scheduled start Thursday and the final weekend of the season. Francisco Cruceta is a likely replacement for Hernandez on Thursday.

Manager Mike Hargrove indicated on Friday that Felix Hernandez may not make his next scheduled start on Friday, according to the AP. Felix has already thrown 168 innings this year, and the team wants to make sure he stays under the 200 mark. It's unclear who would start in Felix's place.
August 27, 2006
Manager Mike Hargrove said that Felix Hernandez would probably need to be skipped in the rotation at least once, and possibly twice, before the end of the season to keep him under the 200-inning threshold, according to the AP. Hernandez, who will start on Monday night against the Angels, has pitched 151 2/3 innings in 25 starts this year.

The Mariners will start Gil Meche Sunday instead of Felix Hernandez, according to the AP. The move was made to try and limit the 20-year-old Hernandez's innings.
June 14, 2006
Although the Mariners plan to limit Felix Hernandez to 200 innings this season, nothing is written in stone, according to the Seattle Times. "If we're in this in August and September we may have to revisit that," manager Mike Hargrove said. Hernandez needed just 94 pitches for his complete game on Sunday.

Felix Hernandez said Monday that the right ankle he reportedly tweaked on Saturday felt "good," according to the Seattle Times. "It's not really a sprain, more just a tweak or so," trainer Rick Griffin said. "A sprain usually comes when the foot goes inward. What Felix did was bend his right foot to the outside. When he pitches, his foot sometimes falls into the hole other pitchers dig in front of the rubber. This pushed the foot to the outside, and that's what happened to him Sunday. He's all right."

Felix Hernandez slipped on the mound during the third inning of yesterday's start, but he kept it to himself, according to the Seattle Times. "He really turned his ankle," said pitching coach Rafael Chaves. "I wish he was a little more honest in that situation, but it's a good sign for me that he didn't want to come out of the ballgame. He wanted to pitch as many innings as he could." However, the injury doesn't appear to be serious, as manager Mike Hargrove indicated that Hernandez won't miss a start.

Felix Hernandez gave up a career-high 10 runs, five earned, and 11 hits in four innings Tuesday night. It was his shortest outing of the season and his second-shortest in 20 career starts. Hernandez entered Tuesday's game with a career 1.89 ERA in three previous starts against the A's.

Felix Hernandez, who is 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA this year, stated that he doesn't believe he's tipping his pitches, according to the Seattle Times. "We thought he was, but we haven't really found anything," said pitching coach Rafael Chaves. "He was doing a couple of things we're going to take care of, just in case."
April 24, 2006
Felix Hernandez stuck his right hand out in an attempt to grab a high-kicking grounder in the fourth inning yesterday and the ball glanced off his forefinger, according to the Seattle Times. "It hurt," Hernandez said. "At first, I couldn't feel the ball." The fingernail was bruised and a bit bloodied, but it looks like he avoided any serious injury. "I told him not to do that any more," pitching coach Rafael Chaves said. "That's why they make gloves."
April 7, 2006
Manager Mike Hargrove stated on Friday that there would be times when Felix Hernandez would be skipped in the starting rotation, according to the AP. The Mariners' plan is to limit the youngster to 200 innings this year. However, if the team is in the hunt for a playoff spot at the end of the season, the skipper is willing to reconsider. If we're in the mix in September, I'm sure we'll revisit that," Hargrove said

The Seattle Times reports that although Felix Hernandez won't run for a couple of weeks, he is expected to be ready to make his scheduled start on Friday. Bothered by shin splints, Hernandez threw 40 pitches in the bullpen yesterday and has begun doing cardio using a stationary bike and an elliptical machine. "He'll be fine," trainer Rick Griffin said. "He's 19 years old. Think about when you were 19. You could do anything you want anytime you wanted to."

"We've been thinking of having Felix as the fifth starter, to start the season," manager Mike Hargrove said. "That's the easiest place for us to monitor his work." It was also announced that Hernandez would not pitch in the World Baseball Classic.
