With Orlando Cabrera traded to the White Sox, Erick Aybar should receive consideration for the starting shortstop job next year. That said, Aybar hit just .237 in 194 at-bats in 2007, and the club may not want to give him the full-time job. There's also the possibility of another trade, or the team may consider moving Brandon Wood back to shortstop.

As had been hoped, Erick Aybar was able to get his rehab assignment underway on Thursday. He was 1-for-4 while playing five innings for Triple-A Salt Lake. Aybar, who is recovering from surgery on his right hand, is expected to appear in at least another four games before being activated.

Erick Aybar, recovering from surgery on his right hand, is scheduled to leave for Triple-A Salt Lake today and could begin his rehabilitation assignment with the Bees as soon as tonight, according to the LA Times. Manager Mike Scioscia estimated that Aybar would need to play at least four or five minor league games before rejoining the Angels.

Orlando Cabrera has been teaching Erick Aybar and Maicer Izturis how to steal third base, according to the LA Times. "Maury Wills once told me there's 11 more ways you can score from third as opposed to second," said Cabrera. "These guys are base-stealers, but they only know how to steal second. They don't know how to steal third. I'm just passing on what I learned from others."

Erick Aybar started in center field yesterday for the Angels, as the club makes contingency plans in case Gary Matthews Jr ends up being suspended, according to the LA Times. "As this thing goes on, not really knowing how close it is to a resolution or what a resolution might be, you definitely have to prepare," manager Mike Scioscia said. Aybar, a shortstop, has hit .357 over 28 at-bats this spring.

Erick Aybar played some outfield in winter ball and is working there and second base this spring, according to the LA Times. The Triple-A shortstop is hoping to make the team as a utilityman, so he's working on his versatility.
