After allowing eight runs (seven earned) on Tuesday, the Twins optioned Scott Baker back to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. In his second stint with Minnesota, Baker showed no signs of improvement, posting an overall record of 3-7 with a 6.93 ERA.

As a result, Francisco Liriano will start on Friday instead of Saturday, Brad Radke will start Saturday instead of Sunday, and Johan Santana gets the nod on Sunday.

While Minnesota hasn't officially announced that Baker will be placed in the starting rotation, he will likely be the fifth starter, replacing Boof Bonser who was sent down to Rochester last week. Baker, who is 3-2 with a 2.92 ERA at Triple-A, was 2-5 with a 6.06 ERA in nine starts during a stint with the Twins earlier this season.

The Star-Tribune reports that Scott Baker will have to be effective on the mound tonight against the Angels in order to keep his spot in the rotation. Manager Ron Gardenhire is getting eager to move Carlos Silva back into a starting role and has grown frustrated with Baker leaving his pitches up in the strike zone. "I talk to guys who had him in the minor leagues and ask, 'How did he get away with pitching up?' " Gardenhire said. "They tell me, 'He didn't. He was always down.' That's what we have to see from him." Baker holds a 5.48 ERA in eight starts this year.
