The Red Sox have not named a Friday starter in place of the suspended David Wells, but it will not be Jon Papelbon, according to the Boston Globe. Papelbon started once and pitched in relief twice during the week of Aug. 21-27. "We're not going to do that to him," manager Terry Francona said.

Jon Papelbon made one start for the Red Sox, but he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket yesterday so that he could work out of the bullpen, according to the Boston Globe. A former college closer, the team wants Papelbon to get used to pitching relief so that he can come back and help the team down the stretch, though his long-term future is still as a starter.

The Red Sox optioned Jon Papelbon to Triple-A Pawtucket to create space on the roster for Jose Cruz Jr., according to the AP. Papelbon posted a 3.38 ERA in one start for the Sox prior to the demotion.

Jon Papelbon worked 5 1/3 innings on Sunday in his major league debut for the Red Sox. Papelbon allowed four hits and two earned runs, with seven strikeouts and five walks. He will likely go back to the minors if Matt Clement is ready to return this week.

The Red Sox announced on Saturday that Jon Papelbon has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to start Sunday's game, according to the AP. Papelbon, who will be making his major league debut, was 5-2 in 14 starts this season for Double-A Portland before being promoted to Pawtucket on July 4. He was 1-2 with a 3.57 ERA in four starts for Pawtucket.
