The Padres and Tadahito Iguchi agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract worth nearly $4 million. Iguchi hit .267 with nine homers and 43 RBI in 465 at-bats with the White Sox and Phillies last season. He settles in as the Pads' everyday second baseman.

The Phillies released Tadahito Iguchi last month, but now they are very interested in re-signing him and sticking him at third base. There's just one problem. Since the Phils released Iguchi after the season, by rule they are not allowed to re-sign him until May 15. But the team could secure a waiver from the commissioner's office that allows Iguchi to rejoin the team immediately, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Iguchi's agent, Rocky Hall, thinks there's a 50-50 chance of the Phils getting the waiver. "Because he's a veteran player coming over from Japan, that might be able to take place," Hall said. "I haven't had a player like this, but it has happened before." Iguchi will sign elsewhere if the waiver is not obtained.

The Phillies officially released Tadahito Iguchi Thursday. Iguchi's contract included a clause that he couldn't be offered salary arbitration once the deal expired. The Astros are reportedly interested in Iguchi, and the second baseman has said he wouldn't rule out returning to the White Sox.

The Phillies will not move Tadahito Iguchi to third base following the return on Chase Utley. Instead, Iguchi will become a bench player, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The Phillies are thinking about moving Tadahito Iguchi to third base once Chase Utley returns, but the shift is not set in stone. "That's a possibility," manager Charlie Manuel tells the Philadelphia Inquirer. "That's something we could work on eventually, but right now I want him keyed at second base." Iguchi has only played second base in the majors. He also handled shortstop duties in Japan.

Instead of looking for an in-house replacement for the injured Chase Utley, the Phillies decided to deal for one Friday, picking up Tadahito Iguchi from the White Sox. Iguchi is batting .251 with six home runs and 31 RBI in 90 games with the Sox this year. Chicago received minor league pitcher Michael Dubee in the deal.

Tadahito Iguchi wasn't in the starting lineup Wednesday, though Ozzie Guillen insisted it was a routine day off and was unrelated to Iguchi botching a bunt assignment in Tuesday's game, the AP reports. Iguchi has stepped up his game in June, for what it's worth, hitting .324 after a terrible first two months to the year.

Tadahito Iguchi was available yesterday but was given the day off to rest a bruised left index finger, according to the Daily Southtown. "(Monday) I had a hard time bending my finger," he said Tuesday. "Today I can bend it a lot better . . . I’m able to pay with it. (Monday) was my day off and it just happened to be we’re very cautious. I have another day off today." He's expected to return to action on Wednesday.

The White Sox will not discuss contracts with pending free-agents during the year, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Tadahito Iguchi, Jermaine Dye and Mark Buehrle are three of the team's high-profile players who have deals running out after the season.

Tadahito Iguchi is going to hit seventh this year now that the White Sox have Darin Erstad on the club, the Chicago Tribune reports. Iguchi hit second most of the last two years.

Manager Ozzie Guillen could use Tadahito Iguchi in the No. 7 spot in the batting order this year if he can get a better on-base percentage from those at the top of the order, according to the Chicago Tribune. "If I make a change with Igu, I will let him know before I do it and see how he feels," Guillen said. Iguchi hit primarily in the No. 2 spot last year.
