Former Tigers' hurler and current Twins' broadcaster Jack Morris commented that Justin Verlander's shoulder has to be hurting because he's not extending his arm as he did last season, according to the Detroit Free Press. Verlander is 1-5, but recently stated that his arm feels great.

Justin Verlander lost his fifth game of the season on Saturday, as Detroit fell to Minnesota 4-1. Verlander surrendered four runs on seven hits over seven innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. Half of the damage came on a two-run homer by Craig Monroe.

It was his second start of the season and first loss. The Tigers are now 0-6 on the season, their worst start since they started 0-9 in 2003, when they lost an AL-record 119 games.

Verlander has been unsteady against the White Sox in his career, as he holds a 1-4 record and a 5.96 ERA, while allowing 49 hits and 30 earned runs in 45.1 innings. He had three no-decisions and a 3.66 ERA against the Sox in 2007.

Justin Verlander threw three scoreless innings on Monday to run his streak to eight innings this spring without a run allowed, this according to a report on Slam Sports. After an 18 win season with 183 K, there is little reason to expect any fall off this season as Verlander has a golden right arm and will be supported by the best offense in baseball.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland formally announced Friday that Justin Verlander will start their opening day game against the Royals on March 31, according to the Detroit Free Press. No surprise here, as Leyland already had hinted that Verlander would get the nod. He had 18 wins and posted a 3.66 ERA and 1.23 WHIP last season.

Manager Jim Leyland won't write it in stone, but he pretty much has named Justin Verlander his opening day starter, according to the Detroit News. "I think he's earned it," Leyland said. Verlander won 18 games while posting a 3.66 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 183 Ks last year. He'll turn 25 next week and should just get better and better.
