Justin Verlander will start the opening game of the World Series for the Tigers Friday, according to manager Jim Leyland. Verlander will be followed by Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson and Jeremy Bonderman.

The Tigers plan to skip Justin Verlander later this week to give the rookie a break before the playoffs, according to the AP. "He's tired, so it gives him a little extra time," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I think Verlander is fine. It's a mental thing, more than anything. Everybody has been telling him that this is the most innings he's pitched." Verlander has thrown 186 innings this season after throwing 130 last year and averaging about 112 in three seasons at Old Dominion.

Manager Jim Leyland said that the reason Justin Verlander got shelled against the White Sox in his last outing was not because of arm fatigue, but rather because Verlander was tipping his pitches, according to the AP. "They saw something, to their credit," said Leyland. "I'm certainly not talking about anyone cheating, that's not what I'm talking about."

The Tigers announced that Justin Verlander will miss his scheduled start on Sunday because of arm fatigue. "All year, they've been talking about doing something and I think this is a great place to do it," said Verlander. "Better to do it now than in September." Verlander has pitched 135 1/3 innings this season, which already exceeds his professional high. Wil Ledezma will start in his place on Sunday.

Rookie Justin Verlander tossed a five-hitter Monday night for his first complete game and shutout in his ninth major league start. He allowed only one runner as far as second base in leading the Tigers to an 8-0 victory over the Royals. Verlander was throwing heat all night and hit 99 MPH on the radar gun as late as the ninth inning. "I've never had a starting pitcher throw 99 in the ninth inning," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I've seen some closers throw 99. I've never had a starter throw 99 in the ninth inning before that I can recall."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland officially named Justin Verlander his fifth starter on Friday afternoon, according to the Tigers team site. "I talked to the coaches [Thursday night] and I talked to [president/general manager] Dave [Dombrowski]," Leyland said. "It was a unanimous decision. Nobody had any reservations." Verlander beat out Joel Zumaya, Jason Grilli and Roman Colon for the job.
