Mike Jacobs' ailing left quad felt better than expected Thursday, but the Marlins were taking no chances on losing their top run producer for an extended time and went with Wes Helms at first base, according to the Palm Beach Post. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said, "He wants to play but we've got to make sure he's OK. We don't want to make it worse and all of a sudden he's sitting for two weeks." Jacobs said he is 95 percent sure he will be back in action tonight against Washington.

Jacobs said, "I didn't think the ball I hit out Tuesday was going out, so I came out of the box pretty hard. It kind of tightened up on me a little bit. The same thing tonight. I came out hard, and running the bases, I just felt it a little bit." Manager Fredi Gonzalez added, "He felt a little tightness. We'll check him out tomorrow."
