Manager Terry Francona installed Dustin Pedroia, who is batting .314 on the year, in the leadoff spot on Tuesday night and moved Julio Lugo to the bottom of the order, according to the Boston Globe. "Early in the year, we tried to protect him a bit," Francona said. "We think he's proven he's going to get on base and give you a good at-bat, and swing at strikes for the most part. He's a big part of our ball club, and we value guys getting on base in front of the middle of our order."

Dustin Pedroia was benched against a righty starter Wednesday at Baltimore, though he's expected to start Thursday against lefty Adam Loewen, the Red Sox official site reports. Pedroia has struggled against all pitching this year; he's 8-for-38 against righties, and 1-for-9 against lefties. Terry Francona also mentioned that he wanted to use Alex Cora Wednesday because the vet had a strong history against Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera; Cora repaid the faith with a couple of hits, including a homer.

Dustin Pedroia was hit by a pitch on the knuckle of his left pinkie Saturday, according to the Boston Globe. X-rays were negative, but Pedroia will be held out the next few days as a precaution. Even though Dustin Pedroia is hitting just .143, Red Sox manager Terry Francona has made it clear the rookie is a lock to start at second base when the season begins, according to the Boston Herald. "Once I get my timing down, the hits will start coming and I’ll be fine," he said. "I’m definitely going to be ready for the season."
