The New York Post reports that the Yankees are discussing a deal that would send Melky Cabrera to the Pirates in exchange for closer Mike Gonzalez. Such a deal might open the door for Bernie Williams to play another season with the Yanks.

Melky Cabrera will not lose his outfield job when Hideki Matsui returns from the disabled list, according to the New York Daily News. The Yankees would prefer to have Matsui in a DH role when he comes back. "(Matsui) playing the outfield is something that may not happen, and Hideki knows it," GM Brian Cashman said. "I'm not saying it won't, but no one in the organization is counting on it."

Melky Cabrera was held out of yesterday's starting lineup due to a bad toothache, according to the New York Daily News. He saw a dentist after Saturday's game. "There will be some future root canal stuff in his plans," manager Joe Torre said.

Manager Joe Torre said that if Melky Cabrera still is playing regularly once Bubba Crosby returns from the disabled list, Cabrera probably will remain with the Yankees, according to the New York Daily News. In that case, Crosby or Terrence Long likely would become a roster casualty. "Melky right now is a regular player," Torre said. "He looks very comfortable. He certainly has given us reason to put him out there."

Melky Cabrera batted leadoff Wednesday when manager Joe Torre decided to sit out Johnny Damon, who has a foot injury, according to the AP. Torre said he put Cabrera in the first spot so he wouldn't have to rearrange the rest of the lineup.

The Yankees recalled Melky Cabrera from Triple-A Columbus Tuesday to replace the injured Gary Sheffield on the roster, according to the AP. Cabrera was hitting .385 with four homers and 24 RBI for Columbus. Cabrera will share time with Bubba Crosby in right field.

Melky Cabrera is expected to be called up from Triple-A once the Yankees place Gary Sheffield on the disabled list, according to Newsday. Cabrera is primarily a center fielder, but he made his first start in right field Monday so the Yankees could see if he seems comfortable there. He is hitting .385 in Triple-A.
