Player Notes
May 9, 2008
In the offseason, the Washington Nationals spent $6.25 million to acquire free agent catchers Paul Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada. On Friday they put both players on the disabled list. On Friday night Will Nieves got the start against right-hander Ricky Nolasco, but expect to see one of the Nats top prospects Jesus Flores in a platoon with Nieves.

Jesus Flores is expected to get called up from Triple-A Columbus today, according to CBSsports. The team will make the move with both Paul Lo Duca and Johnny Estrada on the shelf due to injuries.

Johnny Estrada is throwing the ball, and according to the Washington Post, he's feeling better. But given the development the Post reported on Sunday, that Wil Nieves was sent to minor league camp, Acta confirmed this morning that Jesus Flores will stay with the team for opening day and serve as the backup to Paul Lo Duca. "According to our schedule, Estrada is not going to be out for so long, and Flores is not going to be hurt as much with the time he's going to be up here," Acta said. As soon as Estrada is healthy enough to catch, Flores will make his way to the farm.

With the Nationals signing of Johnny Estrada, Jesus Flores will now begin the year in the minor leagues. The team likes the former Rule 5 pick's potential, but he is just 23 and could use some developmental time in the minors.

The Nationals made it clear Tuesday that free agent signee Paul Lo Duca would be their starting catcher and that 23-year-old Jesus Flores would be given an opportunity to earn a roster spot in spring training. It's also possible Flores could begin the year in the minor leagues. "If he shows up to spring training and he convinces us that the best way to go would be to have him here with Paul, to learn and continue to develop at the big league level, we'll do it," manager Manny Acta told the Washington Post. "If not, we're fine either way."
