Young hurlers Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto will not be going anywhere, as they will not be traded, said Reds general manager Walt Jocketty, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Edinson Volquez is set to make his first start for the Reds today as they battle the Phillies, according to the Sports Network. The 24-year old Volquez was acquired by the Reds in a December 21 trade that sent Josh Hamilton to the Rangers. He has appeared in 20 Major League games over three seasons, going 3-11 with a 7.20 ERA in 80 innings.

He didn't pan out in his three brief major league stints with the Rangers, but we have higher hopes with the Reds. At the least, Volquez has become an interesting keeper league candidate.

The Reds continue to express pleasure with RHP Edinson Volquez who has been a shining light in spring training and once again looked solid in Cincy’s loss to Philadelphia (6-2) in the Grapefruit League today. Volquez allowed just three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings. In one of the more open and competitive rotation battles in the majors this season, Volquez has made his mark and seems well on his way to making noise in the show. “Volquez was awesome,” said manager Dusty Baker, speaking about the hurler after today’s loss. “It was an awesome display. Their hitters were talking. They couldn’t pick up his pitches. He is just what the scouts said he was when they traded (Josh) Hamilton for him.” Those are strong votes of confidence from a man that has seen far too many pitchers go south to throw around such words with ease, and it appears this kid needs to be tracked moving forward.

"Volquez threw the ball very well -- he's throwing the ball great," manager Dusty Baker said. Edinson Volquez was the winning pitcher for the Reds on Wednesday as he allowed four hits and one walk in 2.1 innings. Though he allowed too many baserunners, he didn't allow the Red Sox to push any runs across the plate. Volquez is in a heated battle for the Reds fifth rotation spot, so the fact that he was able to work around the baserunners he allowed today has to be seen in a very positive light with the Reds brass.

Edinson Volquez was so close to having a terrific spring debut, but things went sour quickly. The righty retired the first five batters he faced in order, but then he hit the Rays' Jonny Gomes with a pitch and ended up allowing three runs on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 frames. Volquez is shooting for a rotation spot, but the only rotation he'll be in is Louisville's if he keeps this up.

Homer Bailey has to be considered a heavy favorite for one of the spots, but he'll have to hold off Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto Jeremy Affeldt and Matt Maloney. "He needs to work on his off-speed stuff," Jose Valentin, who caught Volquez,. said in the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It was his first day. Maybe he was trying to impress. But he's got a good arm. His fastball moves. He's got a real live arm. That's what you need. Put him in the bullpen or whatever."
