The Twins purchased the contract of Matt Garza from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, according to the AP. At three minor-league levels this year, Garza went 14-4 with a 1.99 ERA in 23 starts. He also posted 154 Ks in 135-plus innings. Garza will likely make his big-league debut on Friday in place of Mike Smith, who was optioned to the minors.

The Star-Tribune reports that Matt Garza will join the Twins sometime this season, possibly even this week. "I don't think there's any doubt," GM Terry Ryan said. "I saw him in Double-A; I saw his debut. I was concerned maybe we pushed him hard. He proceeded to strike out 13 in front of my eyes, and throw a no-hitter for five or six [innings]." Some speculate that Garza could be called up this week to start in place of Mike Smith on Friday. He could also be called up if Francisco Liriano is forced to go on the DL with an elbow injury.

Matt Garza tossed a three-hit shutout for Triple-A Rochester Sunday, allowing just two walks while striking out eight, according to the Star-Tribune. Manager Ron Gardenhire has stated that the former first-round pick could be an eventual option in the rotation if Carlos Silva and Scott Baker fail to find consistency. In three starts at Rochester this year, Garza is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said that he planned to call general manager Terry Ryan and find out if Ryan was interested in calling up prospect Matt Garza during the Twins road trip, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Twins will likely call up Garza if Silva and Baker continue to struggle and they feel like they need help at the bottom of the rotation. Garza is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts since being promoted to Triple-A Rochester earlier this month.
