Oakland couldn't turn late hits into runs and suffered the 4-1 loss to the Angels as a result, leaving LHP Dana Eveland with the short end of the stick and his sixth loss of the season. Eveland pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Dana Eveland looked fantastic in his first start for Oakland as he helped to defeat the Indians 6-1 on Saturday. Eveland lasted seven innings and allowed only one run while striking out seven. Eveland certainly appears locked in to the starting rotation for the A's, especially considering the recent injury to Justin Duchscherer, and he appears well on his way to being a useful AL Only starter this season.

Dana Eveland struck out the side in his one inning during Tuesday's intrasquad game, and the Mercury News reports that he's believed to be the front-runner for the No. 5 spot in the rotation. The lefty, who came over from Arizona in the Dan Haren deal, is scheduled for his first Cactus League appearance Sunday. Eveland has posted outstanding numbers in his minor league career but has floundered in his big league opportunities to this point.

A's manager Bob Geren got a chance to see Dana Eveland, Greg Smith and Gio Gonzalez pitch on Tuesday, according to the Contra Costa Times. "Smith's control was impressive," Geren said. "Eveland showed a good breaking ball. He showed some good run on his fastball." All three were acquired in trades during the offseason. Eveland and Smith are in the mix to compete with Lenny DiNardo, Dallas Braden and Dan Meyer for a spot at the back of the rotation this spring. Gonzalez likely will begin the season in the minors.
