Ryan Theriot was scratched from Sunday's game due to back spasms. "We didn't want to take any chances," manager Lou Piniella said, according to the Chicago Tribune. The problem isn't believed to be anything serious, but the Cubs will keep a close eye on him during the final week of the regular season.

Ryan Theriot, who started at shortstop on Wednesday, could stick there if he continues to hit, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "We're not scoring many runs, and I need something that can hopefully jump-start us a little bit, so we're trying this out," Piniella said. "The kid can swing the bat and he's got some energy, and I like the way he plays the game. The problem is, where do you put him? Well, he came up as a shortstop, so we'll play him at shortstop and see what he can do." Theriot is hitting .339 this year with five steals in 56 at-bats.

Ryan Theriot picked up his first start of the year at shortstop Wednesday, going 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Theriot has shortstop experience from the minor leagues; he's already played the outfield, second base and third base for Chicago this season. "I've got to start playing people who are hitting and swinging the bat," manager Lou Piniella told the AP. Theriot's productive day raised his average to .339.

Ryan Theriot has been assured of a roster spot out of camp, the Cubs official site reports. Theriot is hitting .409 this spring and Lou Piniella is likely to use him in multiple positions, perhaps in a super-sub role.

Ryan Theriot came to camp two weeks early so he could work on his outfield play, the Chicago Tribune reports. Theriot realizes the ability to play multiple positions could be the key to securing a roster spot out of camp.

With the center field position unsettled, manager Lou Piniella has indicated that Ryan Theriot, who has no pro experience in the outfield, may get a look there during spring training, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "Theriot is an athlete," Piniella said. "It's not far-fetched to think that in spring training, that we can test the waters a little bit there. [Theriot] has played a little bit there." Other scenarios include moving Alfonso Soriano or Jacque Jones to center field, or Felix Pie winning the job in spring training.
