The Devil Rays have decided to shut down James Shields for the year as he's at 215 innings, the Tampa Tribune reports. Shields was taken aback by the decision—especially being told the day before the Southern California native was scheduled to start before family and friends against the Angels. "I was pretty shocked," he said. "I'm not really too happy with the full decision, but it is what it is and there's nothing I can really do about it." Just-recalled J.P. Howell will start tomorrow against the Angels and probably get two more starts to close the year.

James Shields was beaten Friday night for the first time in 14 starts. He allowed five runs on six hits, a walk, and two homers. Shields was the first Devil Rays pitcher to begin a season 6-0 and one of only 17 major league pitchers in the last 25 years to start the year with 13 straight unbeaten starts.

The Devil Rays wasted a superb outing by James Shields Sunday, as Shields gave up two runs on just two hits and a walk while striking out 12 over eight innings. The Rays gave up four runs in the ninth to keep Shields from picking up his second win of the year.

James Shields will open the year as the third starter for the Devil Rays, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Keep an eye on Shields, who's got a solid 2.96 ERA this spring with 25 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings.
