Pedro Martinez will not start this weekend after the team learned that his father had passed away after a long illness, according to The Mets Blog.

The NY Daily News reports that Pedro Martinez will start either Friday or Saturday after a 56-pitch bullpen session. His start will come against the Cardinals.

July 21, 2008
Pedro Martinez, who is recovering from a right hip strain, played long-toss Sunday and said he felt even better than Saturday when he threw lightly in the bullpen, according to the NY Post. The plan is for him to long-toss again tomorrow and throw off a mound if he feels up to it.

Pedro Martinez has officially been ruled out for Tuesday's start, according to Newsday. Pedro is dealing with a groin injury.

The Mets were thinking about holding Pedro Martinez back from Tuesday's start even before his bullpen session Saturday was delayed. According to MLB.com, it is all but understood that Johan Santana would start Tuesday instead, with John Maine getting the ball Wednesday and Oliver Perez on Thursday. Pedro is dealing with a groin injury.
