As a follow-up to a previous story, Pedro Martinez will pitch in a simulated game on Wednesday against major league hitters, according to the AP. Martinez said, "Pitching and being great is not about talking. It’s not talking that defines greatness. Greats are defined inside the white lines. That’s where you become great or you become whatever you are. As far as Port St. Lucie and rehab, I’m nothing. Nothing counts. It’s all wasted words. It’s something that you just have to wait for it to heal. Now I’m about to get back. Hopefully, it won’t happen again."

Pedro Martinez is expected to pitch in an extended spring training game on Wednesday as he begins an every-five-days program, according to the NY Daily News. He is rehabbing from a strained left hamstring. Pedro said, "My arm is feeling great. My arm really hasn't given me any problems and now a hamstring. A hamstring, out of all cases a hamstring. Go figure."

Pedro Martinez is frustrated over his slow recovery from his strained left hamstring, according to FanNation.com. He is feeling dejected, but declined to state how healthy he'll be able to stay, or how effective he will be when he returns to action. Martinez said he believes there's no reason to say things like that right now because he thinks he basically needs to get back to the team, rather than proclaim what he'll do when he gets there.
May 9, 2008
Pedro Martinez threw nearly 60 pitches at New York's spring training complex in Florida on Friday, this according to the AP. The Mets still have no timetable for when the injured right-hander might return to the team.
May 7, 2008
Pedro Martinez will throw a side session on Friday as he attempts to return from his strained left hamstring, according to the AP. “Until Pedro gets on the mound where he starts moving around, he’s just doing his rehab, so there’s nothing to report that’s significant,” manager Willie Randolph said.
May 4, 2008
Pedro Martinez is still limited to side sessions, but he may be able to face live hitters next week. "Each time he gets up there to see how it feels, they push it a little further," assistant general manager John Ricco tells MLB.com. Martinez is out due to a strained left hamstring. He will need to pitch to batters before going on a minor league rehab stint.

The Mets have set a rough timetable for Pedro Martinez to return to action, according to Newsday.com. Team orthopedist David Altchek examined his strained hamstring, and the prognosis is that he can return to the mound in 10 days to two weeks. But that's only for a bullpen session, and after missing so much time, it's likely that Martinez will need three more weeks before he can return to the Mets. GM John Ricco said, "He's progressing well. He's ahead of where we thought he'd be."
April 22, 2008
Pedro Martinez will travel to New York this week to be re-evaluated by team medical director Dr. David Altchek, according to MLB.com. He is nursing a left hamstring strain.
April 16, 2008
Pedro Martinez doesn't share the Mets view that he will be out for another month because of his injured hamstring, he thinks he will be back by the end of April, this according to ESPN. "We will give everyone the surprise of the month, I think, if things keep going well and there are no further delays," Martinez said.
April 15, 2008
The Mets have pushed back the return of Pedro Martinez, according to the NY Post. GM Omar Minaya stated that he expects a strained left hamstring to sideline Martinez until at least the middle of May, and possibly into June. The team originally said Martinez would miss 4-to-6 weeks after hearing a pop in the hamstring on April 1, just four innings into his season debut, the Mets' second game. Minaya added, " We're definitely going to be more conservative with him. With hamstrings, you just never know. We've got to be careful."
April 2, 2008
Pedro Martinez could be sidelined up to 4-6 weeks with his hamstring strain, this according to a report on Newsday. Pedro has been placed on the DL so we will await word of how long he will be sidelined, but it appears that you shouldn't be counting on Pedro offering anything for at least the rest of the month and possibly well into May. The Mets will now have to hope that Mike Pelfrey can come through as Orlando Hernandez is still working his way back into shape.
April 1, 2008
Pedro Martinez will fly back to New York Wednesday for an MRI exam on his injured left hamstring, according to the AP. Pedro suffered the injury in the fourth inning of Tuesday's outing. Manager Willie Randlolph said the team would make a quick decision if it needed to fill Martinez's spot on the roster. It's purely speculation at this point, but we're betting Pedro needs a DL stint. Be prepared to find a fill-in.

Pedro Martinez left Tuesday's game in the bottom of the fourth inning with what appeared to be a left hamstring injury, according to Sports Network. He was faring poorly before exiting, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings. We'll update you on Pedro's status when more is known.

Pedro Martinez announced he was pain-free after Friday's start in which he gave up two runs and five hits in five innings of work. The Mets brought their opening day lineup and the lumber in a 8-2 win over the Nationals. Martinez told the media after the game he was ready for the regular season and he looked forward to following Johan Santana in the rotation.
March 21, 2008
Pedro Martinez looked sharp on Friday as he struck out four batters while allowing two runs in five innings for the Mets, this according the the New York Daily News. "I want spring training to be over, just to know that I made it through and I’m going with the team and not have anything to worry about.” Pedro has slipped in some drafts because of his balky shoulder, but if he can remain remotely healthy there is every reason to believe he can be an effective starter even if the days of his dominance are a thing of the past.
March 16, 2008
Pedro Martinez made his spring debut Sunday against the Tigers. He struggled a bit, but ended up working four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. "It was the first time I had to execute," Martinez said, according to MLB.com. "They were patient, and I got myself in trouble. But I got to work out of the stretch then." Pedro's been brought along slowly this spring but remains on target for the start of the season.

Pedro Martinez threw about 59 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday and reportedly did fine, according to Metsblog.com. March 6, 2008
Pedro Martinez had his first appearance pushed back after heavy rains canceled the Mets game on Thursday, this according to MLB.com. Normally Pedro would just be asked to pitch on Friday, but to avoid the 115 mile trip on Friday for the actual game, he will just throw a simulated game instead. Pedro is on track to be the Mets second starter this year behind Johan Santana and he hasn't experienced any troubles with his shoulder so far this year which is a great sign.
February 26, 2008
Pedro Martinez will not approach the Mets about a contract extension, but he's willing to talk if the Mets approach him. The veteran said that he understands the team probably wants to see him pitch well and stay healthy this year before offering him a new deal, according to MLB.com. Pedro held a 2.57 ERA in five starts last year after coming back from rotator cuff surgery. He was excused from Monday's workout to undergo medical tests. Although he wouldn't divulge what the tests were for, he did say the results came back negative.
February 17, 2008
Pedro Martinez felt so good with his normal throwing on flat ground that he ended up with an unscheduled bullpen session, supervised by pitching coach Rick Peterson, in which he threw 30 pitches according to a report by the AP. Martinez said he felt "...really, really, really good." Pedro is looking to stabilize a Mets rotation that often struggled without him last season. Though limited to just 28 innings last season Pedro still fanned 32 batters while walking only seven, so it appears that only ill health will preclude another solid season on the hill.

A video of Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal at a cockfight in the Dominican Republic appeared on YouTube last week. "I understand that people are upset. This is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic," Martinez said in a statement. "I was invited by my idol Juan Marichal to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant." Cockfighting is illegal in 48 states in this country, and Louisiana will make it illegal by August. It will be interesting to see how MLB handles this, because even though cockfighting is legal in the Dominican Republic, this will be a P.R. mess for both baseball and Pedro.
