"It's getting better and progress is above all what is hoped for," Martinez said. "To go back I have to recover. I have to be healthy. But if God doesn't want that, then I would have to think about giving it all up." Already ruled out of the playoffs because of a bad left leg, Pedro Martinez now will have right rotator cuff surgery next week and won't resume throwing off a mound until June, according to the AP. Exams Thursday revealed a problem with his other calf, which was announced, and also uncovered the trouble in his rotator cuff, which wasn't. "He never complained to me about his shoulder bothering him," New York manager Willie Randolph said. "I don't know, it could have been something that was lingering." It's possible that Pedro Martinez could be pushed back from his Game 1 start of the NLDS if his start tonight doesn't go well, according to the New York Post. If Martinez doesn't start, the ball will be given to Tom Glavine, meaning Glavine probably wouldn't make his start on Saturday so that he would be set up to go in Game 1. "[Martinez] might need more time to be pushed back," manager Willie Randolph said. "I said initially that he might go Game 1. Again, you always ask me That, and I always say, 'OK,' but that's always subject to change. So what I'm saying to you is depending on how he comes out of his start, who knows?"
