Pedro Martinez had his finest outing of the season on Saturday night. He held the Pirates to eight hits and one run over seven innings. Martinez walked one and struck out four. It was the first time all season (13 starts) that he had pitched seven innings.

Martinez strained his groin while running the bases on July 7 and left his next outing after because of tightness in his shoulder. It is the groin injury that's keeping him out. Following the game Martinez told reporters that he would need to review tape of his last few starts to determine exactly what he has been doing wrong of late. Sure enough, during today’s broadcast on FOX, Ken Rosenthal said Martinez told reporters today that he was clearly telegraphing his change-up to Yankee hitters yesterday by widening his glove while switching his grip. In his last two starts, Martinez allowed 12 runs and 21 base runners in 10 innings pitched. In his previous three starts, Martinez was 2–0 with a 4.23 ERA.

Martinez returned to the Dominican Republic to attend to his ailing father, but said, "I feel great physically and for the record I haven't considered retirement. His arm feels great, and he is throwing over the 90 MPH mark.

Martinez had planned to rejoin the Mets for a bullpen session Wednesday, but after arriving in Atlanta on Wednesday morning from Port St. Lucie, Florida, Martinez learned his father, Pablo Martinez, had experienced a medical setback. Martinez then left to be with his father, who has a form of brain cancer.

Martinez told the New York Daily News that he will mull retirement in the offseason so he can tend to his ailing 78-year-old father Pablo, who is battling a form of brain cancer. Padro said, "It's taking a toll on me and my family, my dad's situation. I haven't been there for them. I just realized that between last year and this year I haven't been there for my family, my parents. That'll probably drag me away from the game a little sooner than people expect. After this season, I'm going to go back home and think about it and I'm going to decide."

He is feeling dejected, but declined to state how healthy he'll be able to stay, or how effective he will be when he returns to action. GM Omar Minaya stated that he expects a strained left hamstring to sideline Martinez until at least the middle of May, and possibly into June. The team originally said Martinez would miss 4-to-6 weeks after hearing a pop in the hamstring on April 1, just four innings into his season debut, the Mets' second game. Pedro has been placed on the DL so we will await word of how long he will be sidelined, but it appears that you shouldn't be counting on Pedro offering anything for at least the rest of the month and possibly well into May. The Mets brought their opening day lineup and the lumber in a 8-2 win over the Nationals. Pedro's been brought along slowly this spring but remains on target for the start of the season.

He faced three minor leaguers as well as Carlos Beltran, who went 1-for-5 against Martinez. His fastball was notably up to 87-mph and he is still on pace to start his first spring game on Sunday.

Pedro Martinez had his first appearance pushed back after heavy rains canceled the Mets game on Thursday, this according to MLB.com. Normally Pedro would just be asked to pitch on Friday, but to avoid the 115 mile trip on Friday for the actual game, he will just throw a simulated game instead. Pedro is on track to be the Mets second starter this year behind Johan Santana and he hasn't experienced any troubles with his shoulder so far this year which is a great sign.

Pedro Martinez will not approach the Mets about a contract extension, but he's willing to talk if the Mets approach him. The veteran said that he understands the team probably wants to see him pitch well and stay healthy this year before offering him a new deal, according to MLB.com. Pedro held a 2.57 ERA in five starts last year after coming back from rotator cuff surgery. He was excused from Monday's workout to undergo medical tests. Although he wouldn't divulge what the tests were for, he did say the results came back negative.

Pedro Martinez felt so good with his normal throwing on flat ground that he ended up with an unscheduled bullpen session, supervised by pitching coach Rick Peterson, in which he threw 30 pitches according to a report by the AP. Martinez said he felt "...really, really, really good." Pedro is looking to stabilize a Mets rotation that often struggled without him last season. Though limited to just 28 innings last season Pedro still fanned 32 batters while walking only seven, so it appears that only ill health will preclude another solid season on the hill.

A video of Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal at a cockfight in the Dominican Republic appeared on YouTube last week. "I understand that people are upset. This is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic," Martinez said in a statement. "I was invited by my idol Juan Marichal to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant." Cockfighting is illegal in 48 states in this country, and Louisiana will make it illegal by August. It will be interesting to see how MLB handles this, because even though cockfighting is legal in the Dominican Republic, this will be a P.R. mess for both baseball and Pedro.
