Jeff Samardzija may make his first start with the Cubs on Sunday, according to MLB.com. Because of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Cubs have to tweak the rotation for the upcoming series in Florida and may call upon Jeff Samardzija for Sunday. He said, "It'd be great. What day did Lou Piniella say? Sunday? It'll be hot."

The Chicago Cubs used former Notre Dame football player Jeff Samardzija as a starter in the minor leagues, but now they are re-thinking that strategy, and he may wind up being the team's closer of the future, according to MLB.com.

When the Arlington Daily Herald asked if Jeff Samardzija would be in the mix to close games out while Kerry Wood is on the DL, manager Lou Pinella responded, "Why not?" The rookie wasn't available Monday when Carlos Marmol closed out the win. Pinella said he has a three-man closer committee of Samardzija, Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry.
