Troy Patton's season is officially over. He underwent left shoulder surgery on Tuesday, and the team talked about the operation on Wednesday. Patton had a small tear in his labrum. "His rotator cuff was clean," manager Dave Trembley tells MLB.com. "He should be a candidate for a throwing program in the instructional league and should be fine to go in Spring Training [in 2009], so that's a positive." Patton remains worthy of a late-round pick in keeper leagues.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Troy Patton has an appointment in Los Angeles with Dr. Doom (Lewis Yocum) on Monday and is expected to have surgery to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder this upcoming Tuesday. Patton will miss the entire 2008 campaign.

Troy Patton has been diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will require season-ending surgery, according to the Baltimore Sun. "It's kind of disappointing to miss the season, but I'm kind of anxious to get it over with and hopefully feel better and pitch better next season, have a little bit more velocity than I've been pitching with and I'm looking forward to feeling good throwing a baseball," he said. The surgery likely will be performed next week, but you can yank Patton off of your draft sheets for this season.

Troy Patton cut his side session short after only 10 pitches on Sunday. Patton, who's believed to have a SLAP (superior labrum anterior to posterior) lesion in his shoulder, will undergo an arthrogram in the next few days that will pinpoint the nature of his injury, according to MLB.com. If the arthrogram confirms the tear, Patton will have to choose between season-ending surgery and trying to rest and rehab the ailment. Either way, it appears unlikely that he will be able compete for the fifth starter's role this spring.

Troy Patton, who is dealing with a sore shoulder, didn't sound pleased with his bullpen session Wednesday. "I'm not coming back as easily as I thought I would," he said in the Baltimore Sun. "It's a little frustrating when you're used to throwing the ball a certain way." The lefty said he still doesn't have the same arm strength and action that he had before the injury, and it's possible he has a labrum tear. It's becoming more and more likely that Patton will have to undergo some sort of procedure. He's a risky pick, at best, in fantasy right now.

Troy Patton will toss his most extensive bullpen session on Wednesday to test out his sore shoulder, according to the Baltimore Sun. "It's a little tight, but it's alright right now," said Patton. "We're getting another day off, which is good, and tomorrow, I think I'm going to throw my heaviest bullpen yet, like 40 or 45 pitches. We'll see how it responds to that." How the joint holds up will help determine whether Patton will require season-ending surgery. He thinks he might have torn the labrum in his shoulder but is hoping to simply rehab the injury.

Troy Patton was seen with an ice pack on his left shoulder Thursday morning, reports the Baltimore Sun. The right-hander is scheduled to throw on the side today. The report noted that the Orioles don't regard Patton's injury as a long-term issue or they wouldn't have insisted that he be included in Miguel Tejada trade.

Troy Patton is on a different spring training schedule than the rest of the Baltimore pitchers, as he is trying to work out the stiffness in his left shoulder. It's possible the stiffness could be related to a labrum tear, according to the Baltimore Sun. "It's pretty tight right now, but it's getting better every day," Patton said. "I'm doing a lot of stretching and a lot of exercises to strengthen it and get it looser. They said most likely it's a slap tear. They know there's something going on in there, but they don't know how serious it is yet or what it is." Patton hopes that he'll be "released" from his reduced schedule after four bullpen sessions, and he's "pretty optimistic" that he'll pitch this season and avoid surgery. Patton is competing for the fifth spot in the O's rotation.
February 17, 2008
Troy Patton seems to be one of the leaders for the Orioles fifth spot in the rotation, though the battle is so wide open that six others appear to have a shot at breaking camp in the rotation according to MLB.com. Garret Olsen, Hayden Penn, Matt Albers, Rdahames Liz, Brian Burres and Lance Cormier all appear to have a shot. Handicapping that many pitcher's is just not a good way to build depth in your starting rotation, so until the team clarifies who will fill the role, it's best to tread very lightly with this group.

Troy Patton signed a one-year deal with the Orioles Thursday, avoiding arbitration with the team. Financial terms weren't available. The left-hander came over from Houston in the Miguel Tejada trade. He'll compete for a job in the rotation.
